Expertise & Research Interests:

  • Islamic law and society
  • Medieval and early modern North Africa and Iberia

My research focuses on the intersections of law and society in medieval and early modern North Africa (the Maghrib) and al-Andalus (Muslim Spain). I am particularly interested in the construction and maintenance of authoritative precedents in Islamic legal opinions (fatwas). Thus far I have focused on legal opinions regarding Christian-Muslim relations during and after the twelfth-to-fifteenth century Christian "Reconquest" of Iberia and expansion into North Africa. My current book project, "Muslims under Infidel Rule: Territory, Authority, and the Islamic Law of Emigration in the Western Mediterranean," examines North African legal discourses concerning Muslims' obligation to emigrate from non-Muslim to Muslim territory.
